Where to See Fall Colors in Yellowstone National Park

Fall foliage in Yellowstone National Park

Experience autumn in Wyoming with a visit to America’s oldest national park, Yellowstone. There’s plenty of activities to enjoy, but there’s nothing as satisfying as admiring the transitioning of the fall landscape. Whether you choose to take a leisurely drive, fall hike or challenge yourself to a scenic bike ride, here’s where to see the fall colors in Yellowstone National Park.

When to See the Fall Colors

Leaves start transitioning as early as late August in the high elevation areas of Yellowstone Park and with the last bit of color disappearing around late October. Typically, the peak time for viewing color in the park is from the last week of September to the first week of October. Before traveling through the park, check the official website for road closures due to weather & impassable conditions and other travel tips.

Mammoth Hot Springs

See the distinct terraces of Mammoth Hot Springs peppered with colorful plant life. The springs are also a great place to hear the bugle of the bull elk during the fall rut.

Lamar Valley

Gurgling geysers surrounded by vibrant golden aspen make this a leaf peepers paradise—also a great place to spot wandering wildlife in Yellowstone.

Blacktail Plateau Drive

For the adventurers, take your vehicle equipped with a 4-wheel drive to the unpaved turn-off before Phantom Lake for amazing fall views and colors.

Lewis River

Explore the beautiful red and gold of the fir and cedar forests near Lewis River Falls and the steaming geysers of the Lewis River Canyon in the southern part of the park.
